somebody's probably already explained it well, but, it's pretty much like this....
eventually, weveryone's gonna have to upgrade to HDTVs and even HD DVD players to play HD DVD's and all that... or something, we can just hope it stays as it is for long enough, instead of companies constantly trying to make up another generation of obsolete electronics.

I used to think whatever Sony backed would be the de-facto standard....

Great idea... but in today's free-file-sharing age, everyone finds out which standards are the most proprietary or copy resistant, and then gives the big "F U" to the manufacturer.
Right now there really isn't any advantage to getting on the first generation of any new technology.... because the second generation will always have twice the features for half the cost. Beyond that, you have to balance your own want/need/afford ratio.

Even Microsoft's WMV and Ipod's m4p file formats......
... I download them, burn them to a digital audio file, and then rip them right back down to copyable mp3 files. If I paid my money to download the song, they're not going to tell me I can only burn it 6 times. [img]tongue.gif[/img]
